Holistic Approach to Well-Being

What is health?

Health is often thought of simply as the absence of illness but in truth, it is a much deeper and more holistic concept. According to WHO: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Health is not static, it fluctuates with age, stress, life events and content. True health is not perfection, it’s the ability to return to balance, to adapt and to live fully within the ever-changing conditions of life. Health, then, is not a static state to be achieved, but a way of being- a fluid dance between holding on and letting go, between striving and surrender, between self and world. It is not a destination, but a continual becoming.

Physical health refers to how well our bodies function. It includes aspects like nutrition, exercise, sleep, immunity and how resilient we are to illness and injury. But even more deeply, it is a relationship-one of respect, patience and care.

Mental and emotional health go beyond the absence of mental illness. They include our ability to understand and manage emotions, cope with stress, maintain a sense of purpose and cultivate inner peace. It is the clarity to see things as they are and the courage to feel what arises. It is not about constant positivity but about emotional honesty.

Social health involves the quality of our relationships and our relationships and our sense of connection with others. Healthy social connections bring love, safety, and belonging, all of which are essential to a full and balanced life. Thus, health is also the strength to love, to forgive and to belong.

Spiritual health, though often overlooked, plays a profound role for many. It is not necessarily religious, rather it is about feeling connected to something larger than oneself. It helps us feel grounded and aligned with our values. It is the inner compass that points us towards what is real, good and true.

Environmental and cultural health also shape our experience. Our surroundings- clean sir, safe homes, access to nutritious food and healthcare- affect our ability to thrive. Our cultural identity and the respect we feel for our heritage can impact mental and emotional wellness, particularly in multicultural communities.

Being healthy is not to simply survive, but to be fully alive.
